I had a run in with some flag draped scum outside the Corn Exchange in Leeds at lunchtime. There were a gaggle of them and some bloke in a suit who seemed to be live streaming. I avoided them on the way in but upon coming out I noticed they were arguing with a woman, mid Sixties maybe, who'd taken issue with them and they were giving her abuse. Fortunately I didn't have to engage them in physical combat, merely exchange insults (I'd like to think mine were more creative) which was fun. I'm not going to lie, I was shaking a bit when I walked away.

Then when I tried to get a bus home all the traffic got blocked by a pro-Palestinian march so I had to wait ages.

I only went into town to pay some cheques into the bank my Dad had given me but it was closed.

Impossible to say 100% but was the fact that someone else was already tackling them the factor ? That would be natural .

One of those who landed on the first day was a dear friend who joined the Navy as a Boy Seaman in 1932, was Assistant Beachmaster on the Canadian Juno beach, and later retired to be a vicar, sending off several members of my family .

It turns out the very same flag draped scum I'd encountered at lunchtime turned up later outside Leeds gallery where my friend works and were drunkenly harassing people coming in and out as well as staff so the police were called and 3 of them ended up being arrested (and are now presumably spending a night in the cells) after kicking off when they were told to move on. They'd tried to get in, allegedly to use the toilets, but were refused entry for obvious reasons and my friend said he watched as one of them pissed all over the entrance doors. He also said they shouted homophobic and anti-trans abuse at a group of students who unfortunately wandered into the fray oblivious of what was going on.

Imagine that being your idea of a day out on the town.

Labour voters in Makerfield ‘terrified’ of a Reform deluge

But last month’s local council election results across Makerfield, where Reform UK won every one of eight wards, showed that Labour could not turn the huge credit given to Simons into bankable votes. All of his efforts – a Reform activist told The Observer he was a “brilliant MP” – and Burnham’s support could not stand between Labour’s candidates and a different flood: a Reform tidal wave.

The party won more than 50% of the vote on mostly above-average turnouts. If you cannot turn good work by a Labour MP into votes in places just around the corner, the challenge for Burnham is stark here, and starker still when he tries to make the same argument on a bigger stage.

A huge weight has now settled on the shoulders of the people of Makerfield, and those such as Lisa Aldred, chair of the community group, feel it.

“It’s a massive burden, but I also feel it’s a privilege for us that we’ve been given that choice… But, yes, it is terrifying, because if we get Reform, it could change the trajectory of this country completely.”

Having been under the weather for a few months, I havent been following friends and others in Ukraine. To see if they are still alive even .

Tanya and Tonya in Odesa, exhausted but still working hard . Tonya was nearly killed by one of those horrible Shahed drones last July, but she' s better after much rehab, running her business plus fundraising of course .

Dimko from Lviv queued up on the first day but they didn't have any more guns training or organisation !
When things stabilised . he busied himself buying small recce drones and Starlinks for friends in the Army. Some three or four months later he'd designed and implemented a fundraiser (with some other techie systems and IT friends) , and raised a few million $$$$'s before he joined up a year or so ago . His wife now runs it and they are over $6million .

In 2022, aged about 22(?) he was employed by a New Zealand company which offered to install him anywhere in the world if he could get out .

Naturally he stayed, one example of why is that his grandmother Anonina was .... born in Siberia in 1951, thanks to Stalin's cleansing . It was a struggle getting home, and starting over , but they made it.

I don't know if Z can still look as relaxed as this, because he's had two more years of war --
