In May, Simons became one of the “Starmtroopers” being parachuted into constituencies as Starmer attempts to capitalise on his 26-point poll lead by ensuring maximal conformity from his projected 422 MPs. Others include We Believe In Israel’s Luke Akehurst and Simons’ former nemesis Christian Wakeford (Simons once eyed up Wakeford’s seat in Bury South, though aborted his candidacy after Wakeford defected to Labour).

Simons said he was “honoured to be selected” – there was no selection contest – to be Labour’s candidate for Makerfield in northwest England, a place with which he has no personal connection. The pleasure appears to be all his: “Makerfield constituents want a local candidate and have made that abundantly clear. Nothing else to say, bye bye,” deputy mayor of Wigan council Jenny Bullen told The Mill of Simons’ candidacy, before hanging up.

Been away for a few days visiting some old friends up in Northumberland then staying with my Dad for the weekend. Before we sat down to watch Scotland (lose) on Saturday night I'd put on my 1986 replica top for the match. Much impressed he said he wished he had a Scotland top to wear to which I replied that I'd bought him one for Christmas, a splendid 1967 one with Dennis Law's name on the back. Rather than admit he'd forgotten about it he argued that I hadn't until I went and found it in his wardrobe. He's mostly ok but I could do without another parent showing signs of dementia, although to be fair we'd had a few drinks.

As for Burnham's victory and the future of the Labour Party (and country) I think we should all be sighing gratefully in relief.

First of all the fact that Starmer and those around him appear completely incapable of reading the room should come as no surprise to anyone, after all it's what's got them in this mess in the first place. After talking to people about this over the last few days the general consensus has been that even if Labour's policies under Burnham remained exactly the same as we have now he'd still be an improvement because he can communicate like a normal human being with a bit of character, as opposed to the soulless, emotionally stunted vacuum we've had for the last couple of years.

The word I heard most from people I spoke to who weren't natural Labour supporters (in Northumberland that's just about everyone) was hope, hope that under Burnham Labour might actually start taking on the flag shagging, goose stepping scum who the vast majority of us despise regardless of our political colours.

Someone has to do it.
